Global food systems are facing increasing challenges and uncertainties. According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 8.9% of the global population suffers from hunger, while 14.3% experiences malnutrition, reflecting a persistent imbalance between food supply and demand. At the same time, rapid population growth—particularly in developing regions—continues to drive rising demand, while agricultural productivity remains uneven across regions.
Sustainable agriculture is also under mounting pressure. The intensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has contributed to environmental degradation, while the increasing frequency of extreme climate events, including droughts, floods, and heatwaves, poses significant risks to agricultural stability and productivity. These challenges highlight the urgent need for more sustainable, resilient, and innovative agricultural solutions.
China and Latin America and the Caribbean have a long-standing history of cooperation, dating back to exchanges along the Maritime Silk Road. In recent years, the China-CELAC Forum (2015, 2018, 2021, and 2025) has further strengthened dialogue and collaboration in science, technology, and agriculture, laying a solid foundation for deeper cooperation.
Against this backdrop, both sides have recognized the importance of strengthening collaboration in sustainable food systems. The establishment of the China–Latin America and the Caribbean Sustainable Food Innovation Center reflects a shared commitment to addressing global challenges and advancing agricultural development through science, innovation, and international cooperation.
